US Embassy Cautions Its Citizens Against Travelling To Kisumu Ahead Of Supreme Court Ruling

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a travelling advisory warning it’s citizens against travelling to Kisumu county before the supreme court rules on the ongoing presidential election petitions set for 5th September, 2022.

In a statement released yesterday on Thursday, the embassy cited past post violence election experiences in Kenya and urged their personnels to be on the look out.

“Election-related demonstrations and rallies regularly take place after elections, at times blocking key intersections and causing traffic jams. Demonstrations may occasionally be violent, requiring police intervention. Strikes and other protest activities related to economic conditions occur regularly. Out of an abundance of caution, the US Embassy has imposed movement restrictions on the US government personnel in Kisumu. The State Department reminds U.S citizens for the continued need for sustained vigilance.” Read part of the statement.

The embassy advised Americans in Kenya to take various actions for their safety, such as; to monitor local media for updates, avoid crowds and demonstrations, be vigilant when visiting banks and ATMs. One should also carry proper identification, including a copy of the bio-page of their U.S. passport with a copy of a current Kenyan visa.
