High Court Delivers Long-Awaited Verdict in Sharon Otieno Murder Case

The High Court in Nairobi on Thursday delivered its verdict in the high-profile murder trial of former Migori Governor Zacharia Okoth Obado and his two co-accused over the 2018 brutal killing of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

The judgment, read by Justice Cecilia Githua at the Milimani Law Courts, concludes a nearly eight-year legal saga that deeply captivated the nation. Obado was charged alongside his former personal assistant Michael Oyamo and former Migori County clerk Caspal Obiero in connection with the abduction and subsequent murder of the 26-year-old student, whose body was discovered in a forest in Homa Bay County in September 2018.

Throughout the lengthy trial, prosecutors presented forensic evidence, call records, and witness testimonies alleging that the defendants orchestrated the abduction. Defense counsel maintained that the prosecution failed to prove direct involvement beyond a reasonable doubt, with Obado acknowledging his past personal relationship with Otieno while vehemently denying any role in her death.

“We have consistently maintained that the prosecution’s case rested on circumstantial assumptions rather than concrete evidence linking our client to this tragic crime,” stated defense lawyer Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi during final submissions prior to the judgment. “The truth of what happened to Sharon Otieno must be established through facts, not speculation.”
