Eight Students Arrested as DCI Probes Suspected Arson at Utumishi Girls Academy

Detectives investigating the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil have arrested eight students identified as persons of interest in what authorities now describe as a suspected arson attack.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), investigators are continuing with crime scene processing and documentation as they work to establish the exact cause of the fire and reconstruct the sequence of events surrounding the tragedy.

The DCI said investigators are analysing burn patterns, identifying possible ignition sources, determining whether accelerants were used, and examining electrical installations and structural fire dynamics.

“Preliminary investigations have identified eight students as persons of interest in connection with the planning and execution of the suspected arson attack,” the statement said.

The eight girls have since been arrested and are currently in police custody as detectives continue recording statements and reviewing available evidence. The investigations have included interviews with students, teaching staff and other witnesses, while forensic teams are carrying out a detailed review of available CCTV footage.

Authorities said the ongoing probe aims to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the motive behind the fire.

The National Police Service conveyed condolences to bereaved families, relatives, friends and the school community, while also wishing a quick recovery to those receiving treatment. The DCI further appealed to the public, parents and guardians to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed without interference.

“The Directorate assures all stakeholders that a thorough, professional, and impartial investigation is underway to establish the exact cause and full circumstances surrounding the fire and to ensure that justice is served,” the statement added.

Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
