Government Unveils KSh 80 Million Fund to Empower Nairobi Artisans

President William Ruto has announced a KSh 80 million financial injection targeting informal sector artisans across Nairobi County to stimulate local enterprise and light manufacturing. The initiative was officially unveiled during a public address in Nairobi on Thursday, establishing a structured revolving fund aimed at bolstering small-scale industrialists, commonly known as Jua Kali workers.

The newly established enterprise fund aims to cushion informal manufacturers from rising operational costs while providing affordable credit to expand their enterprises. Beneficiaries across various sub-counties will access micro-loans, modern equipment, and direct market linkage support through government-backed cooperatives.

Speaking during the announcement, President William Ruto emphasized that empowering the informal industrial segment remains central to the nation’s economic bottom-up transformation model. “This financial support ensures our local artisans transition from subsistence operations into competitive industrial producers capable of driving national economic growth,” Ruto stated.

Under the implementation framework, the ministry responsible for enterprise development will oversee the disbursement mechanism in partnership with local microfinance institutions. Trade officials indicated that priority allocation will target youth and women-led workshops engaged in metal fabrication, carpentry, leatherwork, and textile production across major informal industrial hubs like Kamukunji and Gikomba.

Industry representatives have welcomed the financial backing, citing high commercial interest rates as a primary barrier to expansion. Local workshop owners noted that access to flexible capital will allow them to procure bulk raw materials at discounted prices, upgrade aging equipment, and employ additional skilled apprentices.

“Access to affordable credit has remained our biggest challenge in growing small businesses,” said Nairobi Artisans Association Chairman Joseph Njoroge. “This specialized fund will help our members purchase modern machinery and meet the growing demand for locally manufactured goods.”

The initiative forms part of a broader urban revitalization strategy designed to create sustainable employment opportunities and enhance domestic manufacturing capacity. Beyond immediate loan disbursements, the program will incorporate technical training workshops to assist artisans in refining product standards and navigating formal trade certification processes.

City authorities plan to begin registration and vetting of eligible artisan groups next week, with initial funds expected to reach qualifying beneficiaries by the end of the current quarter. Observers note that the success of the initiative will largely depend on transparent disbursement channels and continuous mentorship for recipient small businesses.
