The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) expressed strong disapproval towards Moses Kuria, the Investments, Trade & Industry Cabinet Secretary, for his recent attacks on the Nation Media Group (NMG).
In a statement released on June 19, 2023, the union criticized Kuria’s behavior, calling it juvenile and beneath the dignity of his office, which has become a source of national shame. KUJ’s Secretary General, Erick Oduor, urged Kuria to exhibit sobriety and emphasized the need for President William Ruto to take appropriate action.
The union highlighted that as a Cabinet Secretary, Kuria’s actions and statements should promote a positive image of Kenya. They expressed hope that President Ruto would intervene to protect the country’s reputation from further embarrassment caused by Kuria’s conduct. Furthermore, KUJ suggested that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should also address the matter. While expressing support for Gachagua’s efforts to combat alcohol consumption, KUJ believed that he should widen his scope to rid the county of leaders who lack self-control.
Kuria faced accusations on Sunday of abusing his position as the Trade CS by targeting the news media, particularly NMG. He threatened government institutions with joblessness if they advertised on the media station following an exposé. In response, Kuria mocked the media house on Twitter, referring to advertisers on the station as “prostitutes” while sarcastically allowing funeral and auctioneer advertisements.
The KUJ concluded their statement by asserting that the media would outlast Kuria’s political career and eagerly anticipate documenting his political downfall.
