Kenya Transitions to Competency-Based Education: A Transformative Step

Kenya has officially transitioned its education system from the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to the Competency-Based Education (CBE), marking a transformative step in the nation’s approach to learning.

Principal Secretary Bitok hailed the move, describing CBE as the world’s best education system due to its emphasis on nurturing individual learners’ passions and talents.

Unlike traditional methods, CBE prioritizes practical skills and personal growth, tailoring the education experience to meet each student’s unique needs. This learner-centric model is expected to better prepare students for real-world challenges by focusing on hands-on experiences and individual competencies.

To ensure the successful rollout of CBE, the Ministry of Education has convened over 1,000 stakeholders, including educators, policy experts, and community leaders. This extensive collaboration aims to refine the framework and address potential challenges in its implementation.

A significant aspect of this transition is the recruitment of 24,000 new teachers this year. This measure seeks to alleviate the existing teacher shortage and provide adequate support for the new system. Enhanced training programs will also be introduced to equip educators with the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in a competency-based environment.

The Ministry’s commitment to this transformative journey demonstrates its dedication to providing quality education that aligns with global standards.
