During the Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay County, several Kenyan journalists faced violent assaults at the hands of security officers while covering the event. The incident occurred at the entrance to the Raila Odinga Stadium, where the national celebrations were being held.
Among the injured were Ephantus Maina of Royal Media Services and Mable Achieng of Nation Media Group. Additionally, two journalists from the Standard Media Group were also attacked during the commotion. As chaos unfolded, unknown individuals exploited the disorder, stealing phones and other valuables from the journalists and other attendees.
The violence reportedly began in the early hours of the morning. Groups of youth, allegedly mobilized and transported by local politicians to fill the stadium, targeted attendees with acts of theft and intimidation. Many victims reported losing mobile phones, money, and other personal belongings to the unruly crowd.
This unfortunate incident highlights the growing concerns over the safety of journalists and media personnel during public events in Kenya. The attacks raise questions about the role of security officers tasked with maintaining order and protecting all attendees, including members of the press.
In light of these events, media organizations and civil rights groups have called for investigations to identify those responsible for the assaults and thefts. They are also urging the government to take concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists, whose role in informing the public remains essential, even in challenging environments.
