Fred Matiang’i Returns Home, Fuels 2027 Presidential Ambitions

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has returned to Kenya after an extended stay in the United States, reigniting speculation over his potential presidential bid in the 2027 General Election.

Matiang’i arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday night aboard a Qatar Airways flight. He was received by a delegation of political allies, including Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, and nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba.

Though he did not address the media, Matiang’i reportedly expressed gratitude for a safe journey and indicated he would speak publicly at a later date.

His return marks a significant moment in Kenya’s political landscape. Once a powerful figure under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, Matiang’i had kept a low profile abroad following the 2022 elections that saw President William Ruto rise to power.

Jubilee Party, which has openly endorsed Matiang’i, welcomed his return with enthusiasm. “It’s all systems go,” the party declared on its official platforms. Kioni affirmed that Matiang’i has been cleared to lead the party into the 2027 presidential race.

Speaking earlier this month during a party meeting in Keumbu, Kisii County, Kioni warned against attempts to derail Matiang’i’s ambitions. “Even if they put him in jail, we will still choose him,” he asserted.

Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni also voiced support for Matiang’i’s bid, reinforcing the growing political momentum behind the former CS.

While Matiang’i has yet to officially confirm his candidacy, his homecoming and warm reception from key allies suggest a carefully orchestrated re-entry into Kenya’s political arena. All eyes now turn to his expected public statement.
