A section of students at the University of Eastern Africa Baraton (UEAB) have furiously come out to protest over what they describe as an unsustainable academic calendar, harsh financial demands and lack of clearly well documented policy to justify the administration’s directives.
The students also complain about the university’s transition system as the institution; affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church and located in Baraton, Nandi County, currently prepares to transition from its second trimester to the third.
Despite making several appeals for immediate interventions, the students say their efforts have been disregarded and that learners are instead being compelled to register for the next trimester by April 21; three days before their current examination period ends.
The students have further complained that the institution also demands the ‘impossible’ by asking them to fully pay for fees for the upcoming trimester within two days, threatening late registration penalties for any delays. The penalties reportedly begin at Ksh 500 per day and continue to accumulate until payment is made.
Students who have attempted to question the policy say they have been told it is “in the bulletin”, though no copy has been made available for reference, either to the students or, allegedly, to members of the administration.
