EACC Picks Deputy Abdi Mohamud as Next CEO

Abdi Ahmed Mohamud, currently serving as Deputy CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), has been nominated to take over as the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer. Mohamud is set to succeed outgoing CEO Twalib Mbarak.

EACC Chairperson David Oginde announced the nomination following a rigorous recruitment process. “The Commission invited applications for the position of Secretary/Chief Executive Officer through advertisements on the EACC website and in print media on September 17, 2024, as per Article 250 (12) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 16 of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act No. 22 of 2011,” Oginde stated.

By the application deadline on October 7, the Commission had received 172 applications. After a thorough evaluation, 14 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed from November 19 to 21. Mohamud emerged as the top candidate.

Before his current role, Mohamud served as the Commission’s Director of Investigations, gaining extensive experience in tackling corruption and promoting ethical governance.

Oginde expressed confidence in Mohamud’s ability to lead the Commission. His nomination now awaits vetting and approval by the National Assembly before he can officially assume office.

The appointment comes at a critical time for the EACC, which continues its mandate of combating corruption and fostering transparency in public service. Mohamud is expected to bring continuity and expertise to the role, further strengthening the Commission’s operations.

The outgoing CEO, Twalib Mbarak, is credited with significant progress during his tenure, including high-profile investigations and fostering inter-agency collaborations.

Mohamud’s impending appointment signals a new chapter for the EACC, with stakeholders hopeful that he will build on the gains achieved under Mbarak’s leadership.
