68 Students Treated for Suspected Food Poisoning in Embu

Embu, Kenya – At least 68 Form Four students from St. Thomas Aquinas Igumori Secondary School in Embu were hospitalized following a suspected case of food poisoning, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.

According to Health Principal Secretary Mary Muriuki, the students experienced severe stomach pains, diarrhea, and vomiting after consuming a common meal at the school. Preliminary investigations indicate that contaminated beef may have been the source of the illness.

“Students are reported to have experienced episodes of diarrhea and vomiting and developed severe stomach pains after consuming a common meal at the school. Preliminary findings suggest the students may have consumed contaminated beef,” Muriuki stated.

The affected students were rushed to various hospitals in the area, where they received prompt medical attention. The Ministry of Health has assured the public, parents, and students that the situation is under control and there is no cause for alarm.

“All affected students have received the necessary medical attention and are out of danger,” Muriuki added.

In response to the incident, the Health Ministry emphasized the critical need for strict adherence to food safety protocols across the entire food chain. Authorities are continuing to investigate the source of contamination to prevent future occurrences.

Parents and guardians are urged to remain calm as health officials work with the school administration to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
