Machakos G.K Prison will receive only tapped water for the next three weeks, according to Machakos Health CEC Daniel Yumbya. Yumbya stated that this was done to protect inmates as well as the entire prison community from diseases caused by contaminated water.

“The cholera outbreak that began here was caused by water boozers. “We consulted the Ministry of Health and agreed that for the next three weeks, the company that supplies the prison with the vital commodity will only supply tapped water to the prison,” Yumbya said. Two inmates died of Cholera, and 50 others were infected with the disease at the prison a few months ago.

“This is to prevent a repeat of the disease outbreak at the facility,” Yumbya explained.

On Thursday, December 22, the health executive addressed the press after visiting the facility to donate food as part of his Christmas donations to the more than 800 inmates.

“I visited the prison with the directors of medical services, nursing, and the chief officer of health, as well as KAWE officials and some of our partners, and donated eight bails of wheat flour so that we could all celebrate Christmas together,” Yumbya said.

He stated that his boss, Governor Wavinya Ndeti, had also donated a bull to the prison so that the inmates, like all Kenyans, could enjoy chapatis with meat on Christmas Day, December 25.

“We have urged them to turn to God while reforming in the correctional facility so that when they return to the community, they can join hands in service.”
