Wetangula Insists Court Didn’t Declare Azimio the Majority in Parliament

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula now insists that the High Court ruling that was on Friday last week, did not declare Azimio or Kenya Kwanza (KK) as the majority in the Parliament except for quashing his earlier declaration of KK as the majority in the house.

Speaking on Tuesday before the lawmakers who convened to discuss about the outcomes of the ruling, insisted that the court ,however, failed to specify on any political entity as the majority, adding that it is the mandate of the speaker of the National Assembly who holds the majority in the house.

The judgement quashed the direction of the Speaker on the majority and minority. It never declared who is the majority. It is not the court to declare the majority. It is the Speaker of this House, and you better know that. It is the Speaker of the House to declare the majority,” said Wetangula.

Wetangula further stated that the court ruling only renders the house a “status quo ante,” meaning the majority party is supposed to be determined by the House.

The upshot of the judgement of the court …in law we say we go back to the status quo ante…when you go back to the status quo ante then the House has to make a decision and a finding on who the majority is. The court has not declared any party a majority in this House; read the judgement carefully,” he said.

He further added that it’s his mandate to find which side assumes the majority seats in parliament, calling upon the lawmakers contribute to the matter in regards to facts and law, and not on misinformation.

On Friday 7, the High Court ruled out that Wetangula violated the Constitution by declaring Kenya Kwanza the majority in Parliament, an announcement made by the Speaker on October 6, 2022, when 14 members from various parties were reassigned to Kenya Kwanza, tipping the balance in favour of the coalition and enabling it to claim majority status.
