Secret Kilgoris Talks Expose ODM Rift as UDA Coalition Plan for 2027 Takes Shape

Standard Newspaper reports that President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are quietly laying the groundwork for a formal pre-election coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election, a move that could see ODM back President Ruto’s bid for a second term in office.According to the report, the talks have been taking place behind the scenes and recently culminated in a high-level meeting at President Ruto’s Kilgoris ranch.

The discussions are said to be part of a broader strategy aimed at forging a binding political pact between the two parties ahead of the next polls, with indications that ODM leaders opposed to the arrangement may face political marginalisation or expulsion.The Kilgoris meeting reportedly brought together senior ODM figures, underscoring the seriousness of the negotiations.

Those present included ODM party leader Oburu Odinga, his deputy and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir, party chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed.Also in attendance were Cabinet Secretaries associated with ODM, among them Hassan Joho, Opiyo Wandayi, John Mbadi, and Wycliffe Oparanya.

Their presence has been interpreted as a signal that sections of the party’s top leadership are increasingly aligned with the current administration and open to a structured political partnership with UDA.However, the emerging coalition plans have triggered sharp divisions within ODM.

While some leaders argue that partnering with the ruling party would give ODM access to State power and influence over government policy, others warn that such a move risks eroding the party’s identity as a grassroots-driven political movement and could alienate its traditional support base.At the centre of the unfolding debate is ODM’s National Delegates Convention (NDC), scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

The convention is expected to be a defining moment for the party, with the proposed pre-election coalition likely to be formally presented for debate and possible ratification. Insiders say the gathering could also be used to reorganise the party’s leadership structures and deal with members who openly resist the proposed alliance.As the 2027 General Election approaches, the reported UDA–ODM rapprochement is poised to reshape Kenya’s political landscape.

Whether the proposed coalition strengthens ODM’s role within government or deepens internal rifts that weaken the party remains an open question, one that is likely to be answered when delegates meet to chart the party’s future direction.
