Ruto announce that Talanta stadium to be named after the Late Raila Odinga

President William Ruto has confirmed that the soon-to-be-completed Talanta Stadium will be renamed Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium, a gesture meant to honour the late statesman’s decades of service and immense contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey. The announcement came during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium, where Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja publicly proposed the renaming.

Sakaja’s request drew loud approval from the crowd, prompting the President to address the matter directly.Ruto stated that he had listened to the voices of Kenyans and agreed that the iconic new sports facility should carry Raila Odinga’s name as a symbol of national unity, respect, and recognition of his long-standing leadership.

He noted that once construction works are completed, the stadium will officially be handed over under its new name. The decision has been widely interpreted as a historic move and a national tribute to Raila Odinga, who passed away in October 2025 after a lifetime in politics, governance, and public service.

Leaders across the political divide welcomed the development, saying it reflects maturity in Kenya’s political landscape and honours a man whose influence shaped several generations.

Set to be one of Kenya’s most modern sports complexes, the stadium is expected to host major national and international sporting events, reinforcing its significance as a lasting legacy to Odinga’s contribution to the country.
