Obama’s Awaited Tribute to Raila

Former US President Barack Obama has finally paid tribute to the late opposition leader Raila Odinga, days after Kenyans on social media criticized him for remaining silent following Baba’s death.

Obama, in his condolence message, noted that Raila devoted his life to advancing Kenya’s self-governance, consistently placing the nation’s interests above personal ambition and setting an enduring example of peace, integrity, and democratic conviction that resonated across Africa and beyond.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” he said, adding, “Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions.”

In a statement he shared on his social media platforms, the former powerful U.S head of state said Raila unmatched more leaders globally by his willingness to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation everytime arose chaos and different political ideologies. This, according to Obama, he did “without compromising his core values.”

Obama added that Raila has left a permanent legacy, for other existing and emerging leaders globally to emulate. “Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed,” he added.

He concluded his message by extending condolences to the Odinga family and to the people of Kenya on behalf of himself and former First Lady Michelle Obama

He has sent his messages of condolences, amid growing pressure from Kenyans and supporters of Raila, who had began questioning his silence despite being perceived and known for years that they had close ties with the late Raila.
