Mombasa, Kenya – Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni has confirmed that investigations are underway following the mysterious deaths of four people in Migadini’s Matangini village, Mombasa. The victims, aged between 55 and 91, were found dead in their homes between July 9 and 14, sparking public concern.
Speaking during a radio interview on Wednesday, PS Muthoni assured Kenyans that surveillance and rapid response teams have been deployed to the area and that laboratory testing is currently ongoing to determine the cause of the illness. “The public is urged to remain calm as the Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide timely updates,” she said.
Preliminary findings by the Mombasa County Department of Health have so far not indicated any evidence of an infectious disease.
In addition to the Mombasa incident, Muthoni addressed national concerns over the Mpox virus, stating that it remains a top priority for the Ministry of Health. Surveillance at all ports of entry has been intensified, and rapid response teams are prepared to manage any cases and contain transmission.
Muthoni also highlighted recent public health achievements, noting that the nationwide vaccination campaign has reached over 16.1 million children with the Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV), achieving 84% coverage. A further 5.18 million children received the Measles-Rubella vaccine, reaching 81% of the national target.
On the topic of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Muthoni said reforms led by the Social Health Authority (SHA) are underway to expand equitable access. She emphasized the digitisation of services, including the verification of UHC health workers, as a key strategy to enhance transparency and efficiency in healthcare delivery at the community level.
