Meru Governor Mutuma Holds First Cabinet Meeting, Assures Smooth Transition

Meru’s newly sworn-in Governor, Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, held his first Cabinet meeting on Monday, addressing members appointed by his predecessor, Kawira Mwangaza. During the session, he reassured County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) and Chief Officers of a smooth and dignified transition without intimidation or harassment.

Governor Mutuma emphasized the need for professionalism in the transition process as he prepares to unveil his new Cabinet. He encouraged the officials to continue discharging their duties effectively until their successors are named.

Following his inauguration, the governor successfully appealed to the Meru County Assembly to allow the outgoing CECMs to exit with dignity, citing constitutional provisions requiring them to vacate office with the departure of Mwangaza. In response, the County Assembly has withdrawn impeachment motions previously tabled against six of the ten Cabinet members under Mwangaza’s administration.

Among those facing impeachment were County Secretary Dr. Kiambi Atheru, Finance CEC Ibrahim Mutwiri, Roads CEC Thurania Ithana, Youth and Sports CEC Benjamin Mungania, and Legal Affairs CEC Dickson Munene. Additionally, censure motions had been filed against Water CEC Jackson Muthamia, Education CEC Yusuf Kithure, and Trade CEC Harriet Makena.

The impeachment proceedings were initiated on allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and incompetence. Other accusations included failure to attend County Assembly sessions and not addressing pressing concerns within their respective ministries, leading to dissatisfaction among residents over county governance.

Governor Mutuma’s leadership shift marks a new chapter for Meru County, as he moves to restructure his administration while ensuring a stable transition for government operations.
