Fuel Prices to Remain Unchanged Until June Review, Says Mbadi

Kenyans are facing growing uncertainty after the government confirmed that current fuel prices will remain unchanged until the next review by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority on June 14.

The announcement was made by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi amid increasing protests and transport disruptions in different parts of the country.Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi, Mbadi explained that the recent rise in fuel prices was mainly caused by international factors beyond Kenya’s control.

He pointed to the ongoing tensions involving the United States and Iran, saying the conflict had disrupted global fuel supply chains and increased the cost of importing petroleum products into the country. The sharp rise in fuel prices has already affected many sectors of the economy.

Public transport operators have complained that the increased cost of diesel and petrol has made it difficult for them to continue operating normally. In several towns, commuters were forced to wait for hours after some matatu operators reduced the number of vehicles on the roads while others threatened to increase fares.

Many Kenyans also fear that the higher fuel prices will lead to an increase in the cost of food and other basic commodities. Traders have warned that transportation costs for goods have gone up, forcing some businesses to consider adjusting prices.

Consumers, especially low-income families, are worried that life may become even more expensive in the coming weeks.Despite the public outcry, Mbadi assured citizens that the government is monitoring the situation closely. He revealed that authorities are considering possible interventions, including subsidies through the Petroleum Development Levy Fund, to help stabilize fuel prices during the next review cycle.

The Treasury CS also appealed to transport operators to reconsider the ongoing strike, warning that continued disruptions could slow down economic activities and make the situation worse. As Kenyans wait for the next fuel review, many hope the government will find lasting solutions to protect citizens from the rising cost of living cost
