Chaos Erupts at Kakamega Funeral as Rival Political Groups Clash

A funeral in Mayoni Ward, Kakamega County, descended into chaos on Saturday after rival political factions clashed, leaving the bereaved family in turmoil. The event, meant to honor the life of an administrative officer, turned violent when supporters of Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa confronted each other, forcing the family to hasten the burial process.

The confrontation resulted in multiple injuries, including a police officer and security personnel who were caught in the melee while attempting to restore order. The officer, left bleeding, was assisted by colleagues. The situation escalated as rival groups hurled chairs, creating panic among mourners who fled for safety.

Tensions peaked when an individual wielding two knives was apprehended by security. He confessed to stabbing two people during the skirmish before pleading for forgiveness.

A family representative condemned the violence, stating, “The leaders responsible for this chaos should know funerals are not the place for political battles.” The widow of the deceased expressed deep frustration, lamenting that she was denied the chance to mourn properly. “I did not even get to say anything meaningful about my husband. The priest gave me only two minutes, and my children—15 of them—didn’t get to speak at all,” she said.

The chaos reportedly erupted shortly after Governor Barasa’s arrival, with former CS Echesa and Matungu MP Peter Nabulindo already present. Barasa blamed the event organizers, urging leaders to avoid using funerals for political purposes. “If you have something to say, organize your own gatherings,” he stated.

Matungu’s acting police boss, Jane Pascal, confirmed no arrests had been made as investigations continue.
