Nairobi: DCI Seizes Tainted Milk Powder Worth KSH 75 Million

Sleuths from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have uncovered contaminated milk powder that was estimated to be Ksh. 75 Million.

On 16 May, 2023, the DCI seized 1511 25Kgs bags of the foul milk powder in Umoja phase III in Mowlem area in Nairobi.

In a statement, the DCI stated that the operation was carried out by detectives from the Economic and Commercial Crimes Unit and KRA officers after a an alert by some members of the public on the #FichuakwaDCI hotline.

“The detectives, acting on intelligence, moved swiftly and raided the premises where the 25kg bags were found with the expiry date labels removed and ready for repackaging,” a DCI statement said.

The statement further revealed that the illegal shipment that cost the Government over Ksh. 32Million in unpaid taxes was declared unsafe for human consumption by officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards at the port of Mombasa.

“The illegal consignment, which cost the government over Ksh32 million in unpaid taxes, was immediately declared unfit for human consumption by officials from the Kenya Bureau of Standards,” the DCI said.

The DCI thanked the members of the public who disclosed the information. They also affirmed that a manhunt was underway for the masterminds behind the dangerous ordeal.

“Detectives are currently searching for the mastermind behind the high-level scheme, which would have had a devastating impact on the health of Kenyans if the milk powder had found its way into the local market. We thank the member of the public who provided information about the shipment and call on the general public to emulate this example for our collective safety.This is for our collective safety and security.” The DCI said.
