Where Is Raila? Silence Deepens Ahead of ODM’s 20th Anniversary

Former Prime Minister and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has been noticeably absent from the public stage for nearly two weeks, raising questions and speculation among supporters and political observers alike.

The veteran politician’s silence comes at a critical moment as ODM prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary, a milestone expected to showcase the party’s legacy and future direction. Raila’s last significant public appearance was on Monday, September 22, when he attended an ODM Parliamentary Group meeting held at the Argyle Grand Hotel in Nairobi. Since then, he has skipped several key events, including the awarding of nomination certificates to ODM candidates contesting upcoming by-elections — an activity he has traditionally presided over.

Reports circulating in sections of the media suggest that medical experts have advised the 79-year-old opposition leader to scale down his political engagements and take some time off to rest following a series of back-to-back commitments. These reports have fueled speculation about his health and political future. However, Raila’s inner circle has sought to dismiss the claims.

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed and other close allies have downplayed the reports, insisting that the ODM leader is in good health and fully engaged behind the scenes.

As ODM gears up for its landmark anniversary celebrations, all eyes remain on whether Raila will make a public appearance a moment many see as crucial to reaffirming his influence and leadership within Kenya’s opposition
