M-Pesa users are set to enjoy greater privacy and protection after Safaricom introduced a new feature that hides customers’ phone numbers during transactions. The update, which has been approved by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), will apply to Till, PayBill and person-to-person transfers.
This means that when users make payments, their full phone numbers will no longer be openly visible. For millions of Kenyans who use M-Pesa daily, this change is important because phone numbers have long acted as both payment details and personal contact information. As a result, some users have been exposed to unwanted calls, messages and even fraud attempts after completing transactions.
By masking phone numbers, M-Pesa reduces the risk of scammers using exposed details to impersonate users or attempt account takeovers. This added layer of protection is especially important as digital payments continue to grow and more transactions move online.
The feature also gives users greater control over their personal data. Instead of sharing more information than necessary to complete a payment, the system will now limit what is displayed, helping protect customer privacy without affecting how transactions are processed.
For regular users, the payment process will remain the same, but with improved safety in the background. Merchants will still receive payments as usual, and transfers will continue without disruption.
As mobile money remains central to Kenya’s economy, the introduction of phone number masking signals a stronger focus on user protection. For M-Pesa customers, the update offers added confidence that their personal information is better safeguarded while they continue to transact digitally.
