Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has continued to scale up agricultural support programs aimed at transforming livelihoods, with the latest distribution exercise taking place in Kawaida area of Cianda Ward, within Kiambaa Sub-County.During the event, hundreds of farmers received a wide range of farm inputs and livestock, including maize and bean seeds, fertilizer, piglets, avocado seedlings, and chicks.
The initiative is part of the county government’s broader agenda to empower small-scale farmers, enhance productivity, and promote sustainable farming practices.Speaking during the distribution, Governor Wamatangi emphasized the importance of agriculture as a backbone of the county’s economy, noting that targeted interventions at the grassroots level are key to addressing food insecurity and unemployment.
He highlighted that by equipping farmers with both crop inputs and livestock, the county is not only supporting subsistence farming but also encouraging residents to embrace agribusiness as a viable source of income.Residents in Kawaida welcomed the move, describing it as timely support that will help them expand their farming activities.
Many farmers expressed optimism that the provision of quality seeds and fertilizer will improve yields, while livestock such as piglets and chicks will provide additional income streams through breeding and sale of farm produce.
The governor further revealed that over the past three and a half years, his administration has successfully reached more than 750,000 farmers across Kiambu County through similar empowerment initiatives. These programs have played a significant role in improving household food security and reducing dependency on external food supplies.In addition, the introduction of high-value crops such as avocado seedlings is expected to open up opportunities for farmers to tap into both local and international markets.
County officials noted that such diversification is crucial in building resilience against climate change and fluctuating market conditions.Wamatangi reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers through continuous input distribution, training, and extension services.
He assured residents that more areas across the county will benefit from similar programs as the government works towards making Kiambu a leading agricultural hub.The ongoing initiatives reflect a long-term strategy to empower communities, strengthen rural economies, and ensure sustainable development through agriculture.
