University of Nairobi Gets New Leadership Team

The University of Nairobi has entered a new chapter after the appointment of Prof. Ayub N. Gitau as its 9th Vice-Chancellor. The appointment, which took effect on May 14, 2026, was announced alongside the naming of Prof. Josiah Omollo Aduda as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Finance, Planning and Development.The leadership changes come at a time when the university is seeking to strengthen its academic reputation and improve management of resources.

Students, lecturers, and education stakeholders have welcomed the appointments with optimism, saying the new leaders bring experience and stability to one of Kenya’s oldest and most respected institutions of higher learning.Prof. Gitau, who has served in several academic and administrative positions over the years, is expected to steer the university toward improved research, innovation, and quality education.

Education experts believe his leadership will play an important role in addressing challenges facing public universities, including funding shortages, student welfare, and technological transformation in learning.Speaking after the announcement, several student leaders expressed hope that the new administration would promote dialogue and create a better learning environment.

They also called for improvements in digital learning systems, accommodation, and timely delivery of academic services.On his part, Prof. Aduda is expected to oversee financial planning and institutional development.

His office will be responsible for ensuring efficient use of university resources and supporting long-term projects aimed at modernizing facilities and expanding academic opportunities.The appointments have attracted attention across the country, with many alumni congratulating the two professors and expressing confidence in their ability to lead the institution forward.

Education stakeholders say strong leadership is necessary for universities to remain competitive both locally and internationally.As the new team settles into office, many students and staff members are hopeful that the university will continue to grow as a center of academic excellence, innovation, and national development.
