Ugandan Parliament Bans “Nyege Nyege” Festival, Says It Is Immoral And Evil

The 2022 edition of the Nyege Nyege Festival to be held on the banks of the Nile river, at Itanda Falls was halted in the parliament by Ugandan MPs.

A hugely ambitious annual Ugandan undertaking, Nyege Nyege Festival known to attract thousands from across East Africa and Europe was designed to take place from September 15 to 18th for celebration of pan-African achievements, while also platforming new and emerging artists.

The event had attracted criticism before from several leaders after observing what really transpires. Former Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity, Simon Lokodo tried to cancel it, said there is a lot of nudity and sexuality that happens at the event, even the name when translated to English means “sex sex”

Although the event comes with a wide range of experience and job opportunities, Tororo Woman MP Hon Sarah Opendi during a plenary sitting on Tuesday termed “Nyege Nyege” as a ‘breeding ground for sexual immorality’. She was seconded by the Speaker of the Ugandan House of Parliament Anita Among who declared the festival officially banned.

“We are discussing the morality of this nation; we are discussing our kids. You want to advance tourism at the expense of our kids, right? We won’t permit this activity to take place,” Among declared.
