MP John Kaguchia Released on Bail After Arrest & Standoff

NAIROBI, Kenya — Mukurwe-ini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia secured temporary legal relief on Monday evening after the Kiambu High Court ordered his immediate release on a Sh100,000 cash bail following his arrest by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers. The arrest concluded a tense 12-hour standoff at Royal Media Services (RMS) headquarters, where Kaguchia had remained overnight following a television broadcast on Sunday, August 2, citing fears of unlawful detention over alleged political remarks.

Media House Standoff and DCI Interrogation

The controversy began late Sunday evening after Kaguchia appeared on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi program. The lawmaker alerted the public via social media that a contingent of police officers had mounted roadblocks and surrounded the studios to apprehend him.

DCI detectives led by Nairobi chief Daniel Kandie took Kaguchia into custody early Monday morning as he exited the facility accompanied by legal representatives and fellow parliamentarians. Authorities initially escorted him to DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road for questioning before transferring him to Kamukunji Police Station.

“The accusations panned out as inflammatory comments belong under the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), not criminal detention,” Kaguchia stated prior to his transfer, maintaining that political opponents had misrepresented his public statements made during a rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.

Legal Challenge and Political Implications

Lady Justice Njoki Mwangi certified Kaguchia’s application as urgent, granting the MP cash bail while issuing a 14-day window for the Inspector General of Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions to file responses. Opposition figures slammed the police action as selective enforcement, while state agencies maintained all actions adhered to law enforcement procedures.
