Motorists have been cautioned to avoid the Embu-Meru highway following a fatal accident involving a Tahmeed bus, two trucks, and multiple casualties.
The accident, which occurred near the Sewage area in Embu Town on Wednesday, January 15, at 8:30 p.m., claimed the lives of a truck driver and his turn boy. Both died on the spot. Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby county hospital.
Witnesses reported that one of the trucks, loaded with timber and heading toward Nairobi, suffered brake failure and rammed into a stationary lorry carrying maize. The second truck was stopped at a roadblock for inspection by Embu County enforcement officers.
The Tahmeed bus, traveling on the Isiolo-Mombasa route, was trailing the trucks and sustained a shattered windscreen during the collision. Fortunately, none of the bus passengers lost their lives, though some were injured.
The crash caused a massive traffic snarl-up along the highway as emergency teams from Kirimari Ward and police officers worked tirelessly to rescue victims. Rescue efforts were hampered by the spilled timber and maize, which obstructed access to the trapped drivers. A breakdown truck was used to separate the wreckage.
The vehicles involved have since been towed to Embu Police Station as investigations continue. Witnesses have described the area as a notorious black spot, urging authorities to implement measures to prevent further accidents.
Motorists are advised to exercise caution and consider alternative routes while cleanup and investigations are underway.
