Police Officer Among Four Held Over MP’s Assassination

Four suspects arrested in connection with the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were will remain in police custody for 30 days as investigations continue. The suspects, William Imoli Shighali, Juma Ali Haikal (a serving Administration Police officer), Douglas Muchiri Wambugu, and David Mihigo Kagame, were arraigned yesterday before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at JKIA, where police secured orders for their extended detention.

Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi allowed the suspects to be held at various police stations, including Ruaraka, Muthaiga, Capitol Hill, and Kilimani. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) cited the complexity and high-profile nature of the case as grounds for extended detention.

Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor revealed that the MP died from excessive internal bleeding after being shot five times, with bullets damaging his heart, lungs, liver, and spine. He was attacked on April 30 at around 7:40pm while waiting at a red light near City Mortuary on Valley Road.

An affidavit by Inspector Oliver Nabonwe disclosed that a vehicle believed to have trailed the MP was seized at Haikal’s residence, along with nine live rounds, tear gas canisters, and a police uniform. Mobile phone data placed the suspects near the crime scene, showing constant communication during the incident.

Police recovered several phones and ammunition from the suspects’ homes, and further forensic analysis is underway. Detectives also plan to visit Homa Bay County for additional witness interviews.

The court set the next mention date for June 5, 2025. Investigators continue to piece together what appears to be a carefully planned and executed murder.
