Opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka and JB Muturi on Tuesday joined hundreds of mourners at Nairobi Baptist Church for the memorial service of Joseph Munyao, a former Cabinet Minister in President Mwai Kibaki’s government.
The service drew senior political figures, former colleagues, diplomats, clergy and members of the public who gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of the late statesman.Munyao, who served as Minister for Agriculture during Kibaki’s first term, was remembered as a steadfast reformist whose work shaped Kenya’s agricultural policy at a crucial time.
Speakers described him as a leader who championed farmer-centered reforms, pushed for modernization in the sector and strengthened institutions that supported food production and market stability.
His time in office saw the introduction of strategic interventions meant to boost productivity and protect small-scale farmers.Rigathi Gachagua praised Munyao as a principled public servant who approached leadership with humility and diligence.
He noted that Munyao’s influence extended beyond the agricultural sector, highlighting his reputation as a consensus-builder within Cabinet and his ability to unite diverse political voices around policy matters.Kalonzo Musyoka, who served alongside Munyao in the Kibaki administration, described him as a man deeply committed to national cohesion.
He recalled Munyao’s calm approach to conflict resolution and his emphasis on ethical leadership, qualities he said made him one of the most respected members of Cabinet.JB Muturi reflected on Munyao’s long career in public life, noting that he had been influential both in national politics and in grassroots development. Muturi acknowledged Munyao’s mentorship of younger leaders, saying his guidance shaped the careers of many who continue to serve in various capacities today.Family members thanked Kenyans for the outpouring of support since Munyao’s passing.
They described him as a devoted husband, father, and community pillar whose faith and integrity defined his personal and professional life.Clergy from Nairobi Baptist Church urged leaders to draw inspiration from Munyao’s example of service, accountability, and dedication to the common good.
They noted that his impact was not only felt in government but also in the church and the broader community, where he supported education, youth programs and development initiatives.The memorial service marked the beginning of week-long rites leading to Munyao’s final burial, with leaders expected to attend additional events in honour of the former minister.
