NAIROBI, Kenya -The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) delivered a transparent vote tally in the July 16, 2026, Ol Kalou Constituency by-election, sparking intense public debate regarding President William Ruto’s long-term political strategy.
Political skeptics and opposition supporters allege the presidency permitted an uncompromised electoral process specifically to bolster public confidence in a newly reconstituted commission. Critics argue this calculated transparency aims to legitimize the electoral body, laying the groundwork for a favorable outcome in the 2027 general election.
The by-election concluded with Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) capturing 35,440 votes. He overwhelmingly defeated the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who secured 5,450 votes.

Prior to the vote, high-ranking political figures questioned the independence of the commission. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua openly accused the state of manipulating electoral timelines, claiming administration officials planned to cancel the exercise upon sensing an inevitable ruling party defeat.
“You are now being used by William Ruto to postpone the election because he knows he faces a humiliating defeat,” Gachagua stated during a pre-election briefing.
Following the official declaration of results, State House allies immediately praised the integrity of the process. Presidential aide Farouk Kibet publicly commended the electoral agency for delivering a free and fair poll, declaring the outcome proof of state non-interference.
President Ruto dismissed assertions of political vulnerability following the UDA loss, framing the clean execution as a victory for national democracy. He urged the newly elected lawmaker to focus on legislative duties before the country returns to the ballot next year.
