“Mwizi!” Eldoret Residents Jeer at Jackson Mandago Over Finland Scholarship Scam

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago was on the receiving end yesterday when Eldoret residents heckled him when he tried to engage them in Eldoret town.

The former governor received a hostile welcome in his backyard after reports emerged that the legislator is the main suspect in the Finland scholarship scam, where students were conned out of money with the promise of getting paid scholarships and jobs abroad.

Mandago had accompanied the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, when they had gone to close the 3 day Devolution Conference in the County.

More than 2000 students were paid a total of Ksh.1 billion, but never achieved their dreams of securing jobs abroad, a program that was spearheaded by the county government of Uasin Gishu.

Tough Action

The President has, however, promised that the affected students will get full scholarships, and those involved in the scandal should return the money to the victims or face consequences.

The head of state warned that it was wrong for the leaders to dupe citizens of their hard earned money and fail to deliver on their promises, stating that they were bringing shame to society.

“Kama ulichukua pesa za raia, mtua ameuza shamba , ng’ombe ukachukua pesa zake, rudisha haraka la sivyo utajipata taabani ( if you have stolen someone’s hard-earned money, the proceeds of their hard work, refund them or face consequences), Ruto said.
