Kibera MP Peter Orero’s driver, George Oduor, has been fined Ksh100,000 after pleading guilty to violating traffic rules following a viral altercation with CNN journalist Larry Madowo. The incident, which sparked widespread online debate, occurred when Oduor was caught on camera driving on the wrong side of the road in Nairobi.
Footage shared virally, showed Oduor arriving at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday morning, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. As shown in the footages, he appeared calm but pulled up his hood when he noticed journalists filming him. The video of his confrontation with Madowo had already circulated widely on social media, attracting national attention.
According to court documents, Oduor was charged with obstructing other motorists and driving on the wrong side of the road. The driver admitted the offences, explaining that he was in a rush to drop the MP at the airport when the incident occurred.
“I am sorry, Your Honour. I was in a hurry to drop someone off at the airport, and I will not repeat the offence,” Oduor told the court before being released after paying the fine.
In the viral clip, Oduor was heard telling Madowo to “take his complaints to President William Ruto,” a response the journalist took humorously. Madowo later clarified that he had not recognized the MP during the encounter, though online users quickly linked the vehicle to Orero.
The exchange ignited outrage among Kenyans, with many accusing public officials and their staff of routinely disregarding traffic laws. In a lighthearted follow-up post, Madowo joked that he would “deliver the footage to President Ruto” once he found a flash drive, keeping the online conversation alive.
