Kenyan Leaders and politicians have sent their heartfelt condolences to the family of veteran broadcaster Leonard Mambo Mbotela, whose demise was confirmed by family members on Friday, February 7.
Leading by example, President William Ruto took to his social media, describing the radio journalist as one who was gifted and a powerful broadcaster whose alluring voice dominated Kenya’s airwaves. The Head of State, further stated that the late journalist was famously known with his first-class football commentaries and the signature programme “Je, Huu Ni Ungwana?”
“Mbotela will fondly be remembered for the integral role he played on our radio stations — through the mentoring of young broadcasters. Our thoughts are with the family, their loved ones and the media fraternity at this difficult time,” read part of President Ruto’s social heartfelt post.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, joined in sharing the grief revealing that he received the news of the death of Mambo Mbotela with great shock.

“Leonard Mambo Mbotela remains a household name in Kenya’s journalism and the entire communication spectrum,” he added.
Gachagua specifically noted that Mbotela’s KBC Programme, “Jee Huu ni Ungwana” continues to remain strong mirror towards community moral fabric on what is right or wrong.
Also, former radio personality and current MP of Langata Constituency Phelix Oduor, famously known as Jalang’o, noted that Mbotela’s success journey is not only an inspiration but also a service to the country and humanity.
“His contribution to sports journalism was equally phenomenal, giving real life to football matches through radio in a manner that thrilled and entertained beyond imagination. Mambo Mbotela was more than a broadcaster, he was a teacher, a patriot, and a mentor to many in the media industry and beyond. His passion for truth and his ability to bring history to life will never be forgotten,” stated Ababu Namwamba.
The opposition leaders, led by Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, also praised Mbotela’s brevity and other qualities he possessed, adding that Kenya had lost a true treasure in Mambo Mbotela.
“It was these qualities and more so his integrity, that made Mambo a target in the attempted August 1, 1982 coup. It was his courage – under a gun to his head – that calmed our Nation. We have lost a true treasure; a remarkable work of art and resolute hope, whose empathy, humor and triculation kept more than a generation glued to their radio boxes and TV sets.” Kalonzo Wrote.
Kenyans have also joined the rhythm, sending thousands of thousand heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Mambo Mbotela, with the majority describing his death as a huge lost to the media fraternity.
