Kenyan Leaders Mourn Pope Francis Following His Passing at 88

President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula have joined the global community in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

President Ruto expressed his sorrow via social media, calling the Pope’s passing a profound loss to the world and the Christian community. “Pope Francis will be remembered for his humility, inclusive leadership, and deep compassion for the poor and vulnerable. His moral convictions inspired millions,” Ruto stated.

Deputy President Gachagua also paid tribute to the pontiff, recalling his historic visit to Kenya in 2015. “The Holy Father led the Church with unwavering faith and doctrine. His legacy will live on in the hearts of many, both within and beyond the Catholic Church,” he said. Gachagua offered condolences to the Catholic faithful and praised the Pope’s enduring impact on Catholicism.

Speaker Wetang’ula described Pope Francis as “a beacon of humility, compassion, and social justice.” He noted the Pope’s tireless advocacy for peace and unity, stating that his leadership reflected Christ’s teachings of love and mercy. Wetang’ula emphasized the Pope’s commitment to the dignity of every person, regardless of race or status.

According to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, the Pope died peacefully at 7:35 a.m. on Easter Monday.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, served as head of the Catholic Church from 2013. He is remembered for his focus on social justice, care for the environment, and outreach to marginalized communities. His visit to Kenya remains a cherished moment for many.

The Vatican confirmed his death in a tweet shared by Vatican News.
