The Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs has announced plans to establish a single, state-sanctioned unit to oversee all gold exports in a bid to eliminate smuggling and bolster national foreign exchange reserves. Under the proposed framework, all locally produced gold must be channeled through this central body before being cleared for the international market.
This strategy is part of a broader legislative push under the Gold Processing Bill, which seeks to create a dedicated Gold Processing Corporation. This entity will not only manage exports but also oversee the smelting, purification, and value addition of the mineral. To support this, the government is currently scouting for consultants to set up a state-of-the-art refinery, ensuring that Kenyan gold meets the high purity standards required by global bullion markets.
“We are moving toward a model where gold is treated as a strategic national asset rather than just another commodity,” a senior official from the State Department for Mining noted during a policy briefing. “A single export unit will provide the transparency needed to track every gram of gold from the pit to the port.
This is the only way to dismantle the cartels that have exploited our small-scale miners for decades.”The initiative coincides with the recent discovery of a gold deposit in Kakamega County valued at approximately $5.29 billion. To protect such high-value resources, the Ministry has already deployed a specialized police unit to mining hotspots to enforce compliance.
The government believes that by streamlining the export process, it can provide miners with better prices while simultaneously stabilizing the Kenyan Shilling through increased gold-backed forex reserves. The Ministry expects to have the operational framework for the export unit finalized by the end of the current fiscal year. Once implemented, any exports conducted outside this single-agency window will be treated as criminal activity, carrying heavy penalties and mandatory jail terms for offenders.
