Kajiado West MP George Sunkuyia Arrested Over Forged KCSE Certificate

Kajiado — Kajiado West Member of Parliament George Sunkuyia has been arrested by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of forging academic documents.

According to a statement by the EACC, the lawmaker was apprehended on Tuesday, May 27, and is currently undergoing processing ahead of his court arraignment. He is accused of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate, a serious offence under Kenyan law.

Sunkuyia was first elected to the National Assembly in 2017 and successfully defended his seat in the 2022 general elections under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. Prior to joining Parliament, he served as a councilor with the Olkejuado County Council from 2002 to 2013 and later as a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Keekonyokie ward from 2013 to 2017.

His arrest adds to a growing list of public officials facing scrutiny over forged academic documents. In February 2025, Juja MP George Ndung’u Koimburi was charged in a Kiambu court with six counts related to academic forgery, including falsifying a KCSE certificate and two degrees from JKUAT. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a Ksh 200,000 cash bail.

In contrast, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi was acquitted in June 2024 after the court ruled the prosecution had failed to prove its case, citing irregularities in the investigation.

The EACC has intensified efforts to eliminate fake credentials in public service. In January 2025, five officials were charged for using forged certificates to gain employment and promotions. The crackdown underscores the critical need for integrity and transparency in leadership.
