High Court Revokes Degree Requirement For Presidential Candidature

The high court of Kenya has lifted a degree requirement for Kenyan Presidential Candidates.

A degree is now not a mandatory requirement for any Kenyan to be viable for a presidential race.

This verdict was made by Justice Anthony Mrima and now presidency position is the latest to be rendered free for all ,after the positions of the Governor’s, Mps and MCAs.

Justice Anthony Mrima crushed the notion that presidential candidates had to possess a higher education degree so that they will be able to to deliver their duties diligently and effectively.

In February 2022, The High Court temporarily suspended an election law that bars aspirants without university degrees from seeking parliamentary seats.

Subsequently,Justice Mrima directed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to clear aspirants who wanted to contest but did not have degrees.

In September 2022, high court ruled that Governor aspirants do not need a university degree to be eligible, arguing that the education requirement is unconstitutional. The high court said that a Governor Aspirant was only needed to provide a KCSE certificate.
