Fugitive Murder Suspect Dies After Dramatic Police Arrest in Nandi

Nandi County — A fugitive murder suspect, Dennis Kipyego, died under mysterious circumstances after an attempted police arrest turned chaotic in Sang’alo village on Monday night.

Kipyego, a student at Kaiboi National Polytechnic, was the key suspect in the December murder of his step-brother in Chemuswa, reportedly linked to a family land succession dispute. Police acting on intelligence surrounded his home, attempting to apprehend him after months of evasion.

According to Nandi North Police Commander Simon Muli, officers from Chemundu Police Station besieged the house where Kipyego had locked himself inside. When he refused to open the door, police say he broke through the roof, jumping off the house and fatally injuring himself on a sharp object.

“He eventually broke the rooftop and jumped out of the house, falling on a sharp object that fatally injured his abdomen,” Muli stated. Kipyego was rushed to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning.

However, the incident sparked outrage among Sang’alo residents. Locals protested on Tuesday morning, questioning the official account of events. Many pointed to spent cartridges found outside Kipyego’s home, alleging that police may have shot him before taking him to the hospital.

Police were forced to fire in the air to disperse the angry crowd attempting to block the arrest. A heavy security presence has since been deployed in the area to maintain order as investigations continue.

James Mutai, a relative of the deceased, called for a thorough investigation to clarify the true cause of Kipyego’s death. “It’s unclear what really happened, and we need answers,” he said.

Authorities have promised a comprehensive probe into the matter.
