Flood Crisis Escalates: Citizens Demand National Disaster Declaration

In a bid to address the ongoing flood crisis gripping the nation, two concerned citizens, Anthony Machui Manyara and John Wangai, have petitioned Parliament to compel President William Ruto’s administration to take decisive action. The petition, received by the clerk of Parliament, underscores the urgent need for the government to declare the floods a national disaster and implement effective measures to mitigate the calamity.

The devastating flood situation has claimed the lives of over 200 people, with the death toll continuing to rise. Recent reports indicate that nine more lives were lost in the span of just 24 hours, underscoring the severity of the crisis. The casualties are not confined to any particular region, as evidenced by the recovery of two bodies in Kitengela, emphasizing the widespread nature of the disaster.

Manyara and Wangai highlight the immense destruction and displacement caused by the flooding, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated action. They stress the critical role of the National Assembly in compelling the government to take proactive steps to address the crisis effectively.

“We pray the honourable National Assembly to compel National government to expeditiously declare floods a national disaster, invoking the necessary legal mechanisms for effective management and coordination,” the petition states.

Central to the petition is the call for the enactment of legislation and allocation of resources to implement comprehensive flood risk reduction and management strategies. This proactive approach aims to not only address the immediate consequences of the floods but also to prevent similar disasters in the future.

The petition comes at a crucial juncture as communities grapple with the aftermath of the floods, facing significant challenges in terms of infrastructure damage, loss of livelihoods, and the displacement of families. The plea from Manyara and Wangai resonates with the broader concerns of citizens who are bearing the brunt of the crisis.

In response to the petition, Parliament is expected to deliberate on the matter and consider the appropriate course of action. The urgency of the situation demands swift and decisive measures to alleviate the suffering of affected communities and prevent further loss of life.

As the nation navigates through this challenging period, solidarity and cooperation among all stakeholders are paramount. Effective coordination between the government, civil society organizations, and local communities will be essential in implementing sustainable solutions to mitigate the impact of the floods and build resilience against future disasters.

The petition serves as a poignant reminder of the need for proactive governance and timely intervention in the face of natural calamities. By heeding the call of concerned citizens, Parliament has the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and prioritize the welfare of the nation, ensuring that no community is left behind in times of crisis.
