EACC Freezes Sh62.1 Million Seized From Former CS Ukur Yatani’s nephew

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has successfully obtained High Court orders to preserve $460,000 (Ksh.62,100,000) that the anti-graft body seized amid an ongoing investigation involving former Finance Cabinet Secretary and Marsabit Governor Ukur Yatani. The seized amount, totaling 4,600 pieces of USD 100 denominations, was reportedly found in possession of Ukur Yatani’s nephew, Ibrae Doko Yatani.

These freezing orders were issued by Justice Esther Maina on Friday, May 3rd, and are set to remain in force for a period of six months. This legal intervention by the judiciary aims to ensure the safeguarding of the seized funds, preventing any potential misuse or tampering while the investigation unfolds.

The significance of these developments lies in the concerted effort of the EACC and the judicial system to combat corruption and uphold ethical standards within the government.

Several individuals including former Muranga Governor Mwangi Wa Iria was last last detained over corruption scandals while he was the county chief.

According to reports, authorities are sending a clear message that illicitly obtained wealth will not go unchallenged.

Moreover, this action serves as a deterrent to individuals engaging in corrupt activities, underscoring the risks associated with such behavior and the accountability that follows. It also underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary in pursuing justice and promoting transparency.

While the issuance of freezing orders marks a significant step forward in the fight against corruption, Kenyans are still concerned with the rampant corruption in government bodies and have called on the relevant authorities to act swiftly on the corruption lords perpetuating the vice.

Sustained efforts in investigation, prosecution, and institutional reforms have so far borne fruits in a bid to foster a culture of integrity and accountability within the government and society at large.
