The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two senior officials from the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) in Kirinyaga County over a bribery scandal involving Ksh 60,000.
In a statement issued by the Commission, Ephraim Maina, NGAAF Chairman, and Abigael Wambua, the County Coordinator, were arrested on Friday, 18th July 2025 after allegedly receiving the bribe from representatives of Jererukizma Holdings Ltd. The payment was reportedly demanded as an inducement to facilitate pending payments for goods worth Ksh 2.77 million.
According to EACC, the officials had initially demanded a total of Ksh 270,000 to process the payment. The transaction followed a bribery report lodged with the Commission on 14th July 2025.
A third suspect, Lawrence Kaara, the NGAAF Procurement Officer, has been ordered to present himself to the EACC Central Regional offices in Nyeri on Monday for questioning regarding his role in the scheme.
Following their arrest, Maina and Wambua were booked at the Kerugoya Police Station and later processed at EACC’s Nyeri offices. They were released on a cash bail of Ksh 100,000 each and are expected to appear before the Kerugoya Anti-Corruption Court.
The EACC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling corruption at all levels of government and protecting public resources. “We remain steadfast in the fight against corruption and will continue holding public officers accountable for their actions,” the Commission stated.
The arrests add to growing concerns about corruption in devolved and national development funds, as oversight agencies call for greater transparency in the use of public funds. Investigations into the full extent of the bribery scheme are ongoing.
