Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially declared his candidacy for the 2027 General Elections, positioning himself as the presidential hopeful for Kenya’s Gen Z. Speaking during an exclusive interview with NTV on Wednesday night, Maraga stated, “Yes, I am the Gen Z presidential candidate. We must mentor young people so that they take over from us.”
Maraga emphasized that his campaign would focus on restoring the rule of law, eradicating budgeted corruption, and tackling police brutality. He insisted that the country needs bold leadership to prevent further decline and highlighted the urgency of change.
“After deep reflection and consultation with friends, I’ve decided to run for the presidency. We can’t allow a few individuals to drag Kenya into destruction,” he asserted.
Addressing the issue of campaign financing, Maraga made it clear that he would not participate in the common practice of vote-buying. Instead, he appealed to Kenyans to support his logistical needs, stating that integrity and professionalism would define his leadership.
The former CJ revealed plans to assemble a team of experts across various fields to ensure efficient governance. “I will provide leadership that enables professionals to do their work,” he said, stressing his commitment to constitutionalism and accountability.
Maraga now joins a growing list of aspirants seeking to challenge President William Ruto in 2027. Other contenders include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, and PLP leader Martha Karua.
His declaration marks a significant shift in Kenya’s political landscape, with a former head of the judiciary making a bold leap into active politics.
