Chief Kadhi Abdulhalim Hussein Dies, Nation Mourns Respected Scholar

Kenya is in mourning following the death of Chief Kadhi Abdulhalim Hussein, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday, July 10, 2025, in Mombasa. The cause of his death remains undisclosed at the time of reporting.

The news of his passing was met with an outpouring of grief from leaders across the country, particularly within the Muslim community. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale led the tributes, describing Hussein as “a great scholar and leader of the ummah, humble and soft-spoken.” Duale expressed his sorrow via social media, recalling the Chief Kadhi as not just a religious leader but a brother and friend.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir also mourned Hussein’s death, recognizing his unwavering dedication to serving the Muslim community in Kenya. “With the grace of the Almighty, he served the Kenyan Ummah dedicatedly in many ways,” Nassir stated, praying that Allah grants him Paradise.

Chief Justice Martha Koome paid tribute to Hussein’s contribution to justice and the legal profession, highlighting his commitment to Islamic jurisprudence and constitutional values. “We honour Sheikh Abdulhalim’s immense contribution to the Judiciary and to the spiritual and legal fabric of our nation,” she said.

Hussein was appointed Chief Kadhi in July 2023, succeeding Sheikh Ahmed Muhdhar. Born in Malindi, Hussein pursued his early education locally before earning a scholarship to Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where he graduated with a degree in Islamic Law in 2001.

Before his elevation to Chief Kadhi, he served in various regions including Mombasa, Kwale, and Nairobi, bringing extensive experience in Islamic law and community leadership.

His passing marks a significant loss for Kenya’s legal and religious community. The late Chief Kadhi leaves behind a legacy of humility, scholarship, and service to the nation.
