BBC Exposé Prompts ODPP to Call for Fast-Tracked IPOA Investigations

April 29, 2025 – Nairobi: The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to fast-track investigations into the excessive use of force by police during the June 25, 2024 Gen Z-led protests.

This follows a BBC Africa Eye exposé that examined over 5,000 images and videos captured by protesters and journalists, shedding light on the events surrounding the breach of Parliament. Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Jacinta Nyamosi said the footage offers critical evidence, identifying individuals involved and revealing possible police misconduct.

“We are bringing to your attention the documentary aired by BBC, which captures significant footage and testimonies from the protests,” Nyamosi wrote in a formal communication to IPOA. “Given the clarity of the content, we urge IPOA to urgently investigate any instances of excessive force or misconduct by law enforcement.”

Nyamosi stressed the importance of holding accountable those responsible for breaches of law, particularly those implicated in the Parliament incident. She also underscored the need to safeguard witnesses and ensure their participation in the investigation process.

“The matter is of significant public interest, touching on core democratic principles—freedom of expression, lawful assembly, and accountability,” she added.

The DPP’s office has directed IPOA to conduct independent and transparent investigations, then submit the case files for review and further prosecutorial direction.

In an update issued April 28, 2025, IPOA reported registering 60 protest-related deaths. Of these, 22 investigations are complete, 36 are ongoing, and two cases are currently in court.

The ODPP has reaffirmed its commitment to justice, urging swift action to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.
