Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has made a significant political comeback by joining key opposition leaders in high-level talks aimed at consolidating support ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election. This marks his first public appearance since returning to the country quietly several weeks ago.

Matiang’i, who is widely tipped to be Jubilee Party’s presidential flagbearer, was seen engaging with top opposition figures including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, and DAP-Kenya’s Eugene Wamalwa. The closed-door strategic meeting, which took place in Nairobi, also brought together former Cabinet Secretaries Mithika Linturi and Justin Muturi, as well as former UNCTAD Secretary General Mukhisa Kituyi, among other influential political figures.

According to sources close to the discussions, the gathering is part of a broader plan to build a mega coalition that will present a formidable challenge to President William Ruto’s re-election bid. With two years remaining to the general election, the opposition is accelerating its efforts to unify under a common banner and present a single presidential candidate.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has declared his own presidential ambitions, emphasized the importance of unity and strategic consensus among opposition leaders. “I am vying for the presidency, so is Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa. We are all looking for votes, but ultimately, we will talk and agree on a single candidate. Even if it’s not me, I will support whoever we agree on,” Gachagua stated.

He also defended his political relevance, saying, “I was not impeached by the people, but by MPs. I remain a leader because people still listen to me wherever I go. I am in the politics of saving Kenya.”

Gachagua is expected to launch his own political party in May, further signaling the shifting dynamics within Kenya’s political landscape. Meanwhile, Matiang’i continues to engage key regional and national leaders through private consultations, underscoring his preference for behind-the-scenes strategy as the opposition moves to solidify its base.
