Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has formally declared her interest in serving as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election, positioning herself as a strong contender for the deputy presidency.
Speaking during a series of media interviews on Sunday, October 18, the second-term governor emphasized her suitability for the position, describing President Ruto as a dedicated leader with a tangible performance record in economic stabilization and infrastructure development.
“I am convinced of my capacity and experience to serve as Deputy President,” Waiguru stated, adding that her candidacy addresses key considerations of regional balance, political experience, and gender representation in the nation’s top leadership. “What is it that others have that I don’t have? Whatever they can do, a woman can do better.”
Addressing political dynamics in the Mount Kenya region, Waiguru dismissed claims that President Ruto had lost ground in the political stronghold. She asserted that the President maintains higher approval ratings in the region compared to opposition figures, attributing public discontent to political propaganda rather than economic realities. Furthermore, Waiguru declared that following the 2027 election cycle, she intends to launch a bid for the presidency in 2032.
Waiguru’s public pitch comes amid growing political realignments within the ruling coalition, drawing support from a section of Central Kenya lawmakers who have urged Mt. Kenya counties to remain aligned with President Ruto’s administration heading into 2027.
