Sifuna Secures Legal Breakthrough for Linda Mwananchi Party Registration

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna [has scored a significant legal victory in his quest to formalize his 2027 presidential bid ticket, following a ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) ordering the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) to reserve the “Linda Mwananchi Movement” name.*

In a judgment delivered this week, the PPDT quashed the August 7 decision by the Registrar of Political Parties, which had declined to reserve the name for Sifuna’s allies. The tribunal found that the Registrar’s refusal lacked legal justification and infringed on the applicants’ constitutional right to form a political party. The tribunal further ruled that a competing entity, Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA), had allowed its preliminary reservation period to lapse without filing the required statutory documents, effectively clearing the path for Sifuna’s team.

The judicial breakthrough follows a high-profile leadership retreat where key opposition figures—including Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, and Kakamega Senator Boniface Khalwale—[unanimously endorsed Sifuna as their 2027 presidential flagbearer]. Under the consensus framework negotiated by the movement, [Babu Owino was backed for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, while Sifuna was tasked with unveiling the primary political party vehicle by mid-October].

“The decision by the Registrar declining to reserve the name Linda Mwananchi is hereby set aside,” [the Tribunal ruled], ordering the ORPP to reconsider and reserve the name within seven days.

However, the movement faces a fresh administrative challenge after a rival claimant, Charles Wanyonyi, petitioned the ORPP demanding priority consideration for his prior application for the “Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya”. Despite the emerging friction, Sifuna’s legal team expressed confidence that the PPDT’s binding order guarantees the movement’s registration timeline ahead of the October 15 deadline for submitting party officials’ specimen signatures to the ORPP.
