Safaricom Hits Billion-Dollar Milestone Despite Ethiopian Setback

Safaricom, the Kenyan telecommunications powerhouse, has made history by becoming the first regional company to surpass a billion-dollar mark in earnings, despite facing losses in its Ethiopian subsidiary.

The company reported a 1.2% increase in net income to 63 billion Kenyan shillings, with operating profit soaring by 20% to Sh140 billion.

According to the CEO, Peter Ndegwa, this impressive financial performance was largely driven by Safaricom’s M-Pesa service, which contributed significantly to its service revenue.

“The company’s total revenue grew to KShs 329 billion, with M-Pesa alone raking in KShs 139 billion. Safaricom also witnessed a substantial growth in its customer base and transaction volumes, with over 4.4 million active customers and KSh 40.2 trillion in transaction volumes. “Said Ndegwa.

Despite the challenges posed by its Ethiopian operations, Safaricom’s success underscores its dominance in the telecommunications industry and its ability to innovate and adapt to changing market dynamics.
