Maina Njenga, a former leader of the Mungiki sect, has been released on bail for Ksh.100,000 after being detained since his arrest on July 19 in Olosurutia, Kajiado County. Peter Kamunya and Felix Lakishe, also arrested with him, are similarly facing criminal charges.
The allegations against the three involve five counts of preparing to commit a crime and drug trafficking. Additional charges include attempts to incite public violence and orchestrating an unlawful gathering expected to occur in Nairobi city county and other parts of the country.
Court documents obtained by Citizen Digital reveal that Njenga, Kamunya, and Lakishe were found in possession of illegal substances. The discovered drugs included cannabis, weighing 1.224 grams and valued at Ksh.36,720, and cocaine, weighing 486 grams and estimated at Ksh.1.944 million in market value. The narcotics were concealed in plastic bags inside a Toyota Hilux Surf with the registration number KCJ 413X.
Moreover, the court documents indicate that the accused were found with an array of weapons on July 20. These included 14 machetes, 24 Maasai swords, 46 rungus (wooden clubs), and three jembe sticks (agricultural hand tools). The possession of these weapons, given the circumstances, has led to accusations of felony intentions.
